Keep Your Pets Hydrated This Summer

When the thermometer hits 40°C, it’s not just humans who suffer. Our beloved pets — big or small, furry or feathered — need proper hydration to stay healthy and safe.

And yes, all means all: dogs, cats, canaries, parrots, hamsters, rabbits. No one should go thirsty.

Why is hydration so important?

Just like us, animals lose fluids through breathing, urinating, defecating, and in some species, sweating or panting. Heat accelerates this fluid loss dramatically.

Dehydration can lead to:

  • Collapse and lethargy
  • Heatstroke
  • Organ failure
  • Death in severe cases

How to tell your pet is dehydrated

Dogs

  • Dry nose or gums
  • Lethargy, unwilling to walk
  • Heavy panting
  • Dark or sticky urine

Cats

  • Rarely drinks water (a common issue)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Low skin elasticity
  • Dry eyes or mouth

Birds (parrots, canaries, finches)

  • Open-beak breathing
  • Sitting quietly for long periods
  • Difficulty flying
  • Feather loss or poor condition

Rabbits and Hamsters

  • Hiding in one spot for long
  • Dry nose
  • Low urination
  • Rapid breathing

Practical hydration tips

Dogs and Cats

  • Replace fresh water every 4–6 hours
  • Provide multiple bowls in cool, shaded spots
  • Avoid water that’s too cold or warm
  • Wet food can help (always ask your vet first)

Birds

  • Offer shallow baths daily
  • Gentle misting with cool water (never too close)
  • Use ceramic or glass water bowls, away from direct sunlight

Rabbits and Hamsters

  • Clean drinking water daily in a bottle or heavy bowl
  • Offer leafy greens (e.g., romaine, endive) in moderation
  • Place cage in a cool, shaded, well-ventilated area

Avoid

  • Stale or overheated water
  • Plastic bowls under direct sun
  • Overfeeding watery fruits or vegetables (can cause diarrhea)
  • Extreme changes (ice-cold water or sudden food swaps)

How much water does my pet need?

Animal Type Daily water intake per kg of body weight

  • Dog 50 – 60 ml / kg
  • Cat 40 – 50 ml / kg
  • Parrot 10 – 20 ml / kg (or 5–10 ml for small birds)
  • Rabbit 100 – 150 ml / kg
  • Hamster 10 – 15 ml / 100g of body weight

Example: A 10 kg dog needs around 500–600 ml of water per day, possibly more on hot days or after outdoor walks.
