Fresh Foods for Hamsters: What You Need to Know

Hamsters may be tiny, but they have big nutritional needs! While commercial dry food is the foundation of their diet, the right fresh foods can provide essential nutrients, hydration, and even a little joy to their day.

Safe Fresh Foods for Hamsters

Safe Vegetables:

  • Cucumber, 2–3x/week, Thin slices, minimal seeds
  • Carrot, 2–3x/week,  Rich in vitamin A – small amounts
  • Broccoli, 1–2x/week, Lightly steamed to avoid gas
  • Romaine lettuce, 1x/week, Avoid iceberg – causes diarrhea
  • Zucchini, 2x/week,  Raw or lightly steamed
  • Sweet bell pepper, 1x/week, No seeds – red or yellow preferred

Safe Fruits (tiny portions only):

  • Apple (no seeds), 1–2x/week, Sweet, well-tolerated
  • Banana, 1x/week, High sugar – offer sparingly
  • Strawberry, 1x/week, Wash well, no pesticides
